Wexford Youths remain in the relegation play off position after a 1-0 defeat at home to St Patrick’s Athletic on Monday evening in Ferrycarrig Park.
Shane Keegan’s side were outplayed for most of the 90 minutes, but late chances from Danny Furlong and Andy Mulligan almost salvaged an equaliser to Ian Bermingham’s first-half strike.
St Pats started brighter and and Wexford Youths defender Gary Delaney had to be on high alert as he blocked Graham Kelly's strike in the opening five minutes. Kelly had another chance minutes later when his header forced Doyle into a smart save.
The visitors continued to press and Timlin’s header from Conan Byrne’s right-wing forced Doyle into an even better save
And St Pats made their dominance count soon after with a goal of real quality on 27 minutes. St Pats fulback Ian Bermingham picked up a Youths clearance and played a one-two with Christy Fagan on the edge of the Youths penalty box, before firing a low, left-footed strike into the bottom corner of Graham Doyle’s goal.
Jonny Bonner and Danny Furlong had chances to level before the break but neither could find a way past St Pats keeper Clarke.
On the hour mark when O’Brien fed Byrne down the right for the visitors, but Billy Dennehy's headed effort drifted just wide of Doyle’s back post.
Shane Keegan’s team almost levelled with 12 minutes to go. Subs Aidan Keenan and Conor O’Keefe combined down the right and the latter crossed for Furlong, but his acrobatic overhead kick was just over Brendan’s Clarke’s crossbar.
Danny Furlong went closer again inside the last five minutes. Subsitute Shane Dempsey’s ball from the back wasn’t cleared by the visitors defence and that saw Furlong strike past Clarke, but St Pats defender Darren Dennehy got back on the goalline to hook the ball clear and maintain their narrow lead.
Andy Mulligan went close in the final minutes to levelling but his header from Furlong’s left-wing cross couldn’t find the target. St Pats jump to sixth in the league table, while Wexford Youths remain second from bottom.
