Friendly Report: Bohemians 0 - 2 Shelbourne

A first-half brace from James English was enough to see Shelbourne overcome local rivals Bohemians in a pre-season friendly at Dalymount Park on Sunday afternoon.
It was Bohemians who created the first opening of the game after they forced an early corner which Fitzgerald planted onto the head of Derek Prendergast on the near post but Greg Murray was on his toes and gathered it into his grasp.
Soon after, Keith Buckley played a lovely ball through to Jake Kelly but his attempt to dink an onrushing Murray fell just wide of the post.
However, despite Bohemians early control it was Shelbourne who broke the deadlock on the 11th minute after Jamie Doyle received the ball out wide before whipping the perfect ball into the path of an oncoming English who made no mistake in slotting it beneath Dean Delaney and into the net.
Bohemians reacted well to the goal and began to pick up speed, creating a couple of half-chances for forward man Ismahil Akinade before he was forced off with a leg injury.
First, Akinade received the ball from Aymen Ben Mohammed just inside the 18 yard area before adjusting his body to get his shot away, however, it sailed above Murray’s crossbar.
Buckley and Roberto Lopes then combined well before laying it off to Akinade whose shot was surely bound for the bottom corner, however, it was deflected just wide of the post.
Lopes then spread the ball wide to Lorcan Fitzgerald who skimmed a fantastic through ball towards Akinade’s replacement Kurtis Byrne but Murray was quick off his line to clear it away before Byrne could make significant contact.
Byrne then carved out an opportunity of his own on the half-hour mark when his 30 yard effort looped just wide of the target.
Minutes later English doubled his and Shelbourne’s tally when a high ball dropped nicely to his feet at the edge of the six yard box before he squeezed it through Delaney’s legs and into the bottom of the goal.
The Gypsies almost pulled one back five minutes later when Byrne showed impressive speed down the left wing before dragging the ball back to Lopes but he failed to make a clear connection and it crawled wide of the target.
Eoin Wearen had the final chance of the half when he created a yard of space before hitting a stinging drive but Murray was again on hand to clutch the ball into his chest.
The chances continued to flow for Keith Long’s men in the opening period of the second forty-five. Byrne took the ball into his feet before hitting it with the outside of his boot to force Murray into a solid stop.
Byrne then switched the ball across to Buckley and his effort was again well saved by the in-form Murray.
Shelbourne substitute Mark Sandford’s dynamic pace began to cause the Bohemian’s defence some problems as he latched onto a number of long balls, keeping Delaney alert on his line to ensure he couldn’t add a third.
Fitzgerald almost grabbed a goal back for Bohemians on the hour mark when his sweetly struck free-kick was curling towards the top corner only for Murray’s outstretched palm to knock it wide of the crossbar.
Mark Quiqley then came onto the field and he came close when he turned inside the Shelbourne box before aiming his shot towards the bottom left corner but substitute ‘keeper Jack Brady’s impressive save kept it out.
With quarter of an hour left to play Bohemians had a strong case for a penalty when Byrne was played through on goal only for Brady to block him in his path to send him tumbling. The referee didn’t believe there was enough contact to warrant a spot kick and Byrne rose to his feet in dismay.
Shelbourne’s defence stood firm for the closing ten minutes to see out the game and secure an impressive pre-season victory for Kevin Doherty’s young squad.
