Shamrock Rovers continued their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 defeat to an LA Galaxy side, that included Irish Captain Robbie Keane at a packed Tallaght Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game lacked real opportunity, the winning goal came courtesy of a deflected effort from Galaxy midfielder Mika Vayrynen just before halftime.
It was LA Galaxy that started the better of the two sides and the MLS side should’ve taken the lead after seven minutes when striker Alan Gordon managed to get in front of his marker to meet a Gyasi Zardes corner. However, his header went just wide from six yards out.
Gordon was a threat from corners all afternoon and had another opportunity to head Galaxy in front five minutes later when he rose to meet Vayrynen’s corner, only to fail to make significant contact at the crucial moment.
Juninho’s quality long balls were also a threat to Pat Fenlon’s side. After 20 minutes, the Brazilian picked out Gordon with a 20 yard pass; Gordon turned and shot, only to see his effort easily caught by Barry Murphy in The Hoops goal.
Stefan Ishizaki came within inches of putting Bruce Arena’s side in the lead after 25 minutes, as he travelled to the bye-line before chipping an exquisite ball goal wards, only to see Hoops full-back Simon Madden clear the ball off the goal-line.
Although the home side didn’t have many efforts at goal in the first half, they did try and use their possession effectively. A good piece of play from Keith Fahey, followed by a quality cross from Sean O’Connor that found the head of Gavin Brennan, however his effort was deflected to safety by Galaxy stopper Brian Rowe.
For all their chances, Galaxy took the lead a minute before halftime, as midfielder Ishizaki got to the bye-line, before pulling the ball back for Vayrynen, who saw his effort deflected off Hoops defender Max Blanchard and into the Rovers net.
Like the first, the second half lacked opportunities. Both sides kept the ball well, without any real penetration.
The first chance of the second period came on 51 minutes, when Keane skipped past David Webster, before clipping the ball to Gordon at the back post. However the big striker saw his acrobatic effort sail over Murphy’s cross-bar.
There weren’t many clear cut opportunities in the second half, but Galaxy should’ve extended their lead just after the hour mark, when Keane found Zardes, however his effort was easily stopped by Murphy in the Rovers goal.
Halftime substitute Michael Drennan had Rovers’ first effort of the second half, as he rattled an effort into Brian Perk’s side-netting from the left-hand touchline.
There was a chance for The Hoops to level on 78 minutes as a goalmouth scramble ended in a ball falling to Kieran Marty Waters, but his scuffed effort sailed safely wide of the Galaxy goal.
Galaxy substitute Ignacio Maganto had a chance to seal the win for the Americans in stoppage time as he got in behind, before chipping an effort that went just wide of the far post.
