Pre-season action returned to Tallaght Stadium for the first time in 2015 when Shamrock Rovers hosted Athlone Town on a calm Friday evening. The game failed to produce any goals but none the less, Pat Fenlon and Eddie Wallace will be happy to have seen their side’s get a good run out to keep their pre-season preparations moving in the right direction.
A modest attendance turned out to see some of the new signings on show. Michael Drennan was one of those and despite only playing the first forty five minutes, he certainly did enough to give hope to his new manager and fans for the months ahead. Just ten minutes into the contest he saw his effort cleared off the line by Michael Brown, the first of many goal line clearances carried out by Athlone’s back line during the opening period.
Danny North, who scored on his debut last week against Waterford, should have scored the game’s opening goal, only to completely miss hit his effort at an open goal after a penalty area melee.
We had to wait nearly another fifteen minutes just for the next effort on goal as both teams struggled to keep up with the tempo of the game. Brown, who was a bright spark at both ends of the pitch for Athlone, shot into the side nettings although Craig Hyland never looked overly concerned between the home pair of sticks.
Just before half time North should have scored after a delightful over the top ball from Drennan. However, the former Sligo Rovers man failed to convert yet again.
The start of the second half was a whole lot better than the first as Doyle, Purdy and Chindea all had good solid efforts inside the opening ten minutes for Eddie Wallace’s side
Fahey who was on as a half time substitute, dominated much of Rovers play after the interval with his eye for a defence splitting pass particularly notable.
Kieran Marty Waters was then clipped on his run through on goal, but advantage was played, averting a penalty, and when Waters steadied himself he could only smash the ball at a diving Cusack.
A drab result in the end but plenty of positives for both managers to consider over the next few weeks.
