KEITH Fahey was the hero for St Patrick’s Athletic as his goal helped The Saints beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 in Richmond Park to win the inaugural President’s Cup. Fahey’s volley after 16 minutes was the difference between the sides in a hard fought win on Sunday afternoon.
The first chance of the game came after seven minutes, as Eric Odhiambo crossed high into Pat’s penalty box, but the cross was headed behind by Pat’s defender Kenny Browne. The resulting corner was easily claimed by Brendan Clarke in the St. Pat’s goal.
Former Saint Danny North came within a hair’s breath of opening the scoring after 13 minutes. Odhiambo sprinted to the bye-line before pulling the ball back for North who’s shot went inches wide of Clarke’s left-hand post.
Fahey then put The Saints in front against the run of play. A Killian Brennan corner was headed away by Joseph Ndo, but his clearance fell straight to the boot of the Irish International and he volleyed crisply into the top left hand corner.
St. Pat’s should have been 2-0 up within five minutes. Brennan won the ball on the right wing, before finding Chris Forrester with a low ball across the Sligo penalty area. However the midfielder’s shot went just wide of Richard Brush’s post. Forrester caused Sligo problems down the left side all game. After a half an hour, he played a neat one two with Christy Fagan, but Fagan shot straight at Brush.
The Bit O’Red had a chance to level minutes later. John Russell found himself in yards of space on the right hand side of the field. The ex-Saint crossed for Aaron Greene who headed well over Clarke’s cross-bar. The Saints had the final chance of the half, as Greene was dispossed by Brennan. The 2013 PFAI Player of the Year then travelled a couple of yards, before unleashing a powerful effort which was excellently held by Brush.
The Saints thought they were two up on 49 minutes. Conan Byrne’s cross from the right wing found the unmarked Fagan, who put the ball in the bottom corner of the net. However, he was denied his first goal of the season by Emmett Dynan’s offside flag on the Camac side of the Richmond Park.
Rovers had a chance to equalise ten minutes into the second half. Former Pat’s man John Russell wriggled his way into Clarke’s penalty area, before seeing his shot blocked by The Saint’s rear guard on multiple occasions.
The second half wasn’t as high quality as the opening period. However the passion and desire was extremely evident. Ken Oman fouled Raffaele Cretaro on the right wing and he then proceeded to express his passion by venting his frustrations at the linesman and as a result the former Shamrock Rovers captain was booked.
The Saints had a chance to double their lead with eight minutes to go. Substitute Daryl Kavanagh combined with Brennan, but Brennan’s shot drifted a couple of yards wide of Brush’s goal.
Fagan didn’t have one of his best games in front of goal and he wasted another chance five minutes from time, as he dispossessed Greene, but he then went on to shoot tamely into the grateful gloves of Brush. Sligo should have equalised in stoppage time, as Cretaro found Greene at the back post in acres of space, however his shot went narrowly wide.
So St Pat’s go into their first game of the league season away to Cork on the back of winning the inaugural Presidents Cup, while runners up Sligo host newly promoted Athlone Town in The Showgrounds next Saturday night.
