Premier League giants Liverpool beat Shamrock Rovers 4-0 in a post season friendly at The Aviva Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Goals from Iago Aspas, Fabio Borini, Matrin Kelly and youngster, Jack Dunn helped the Reds to their rout over The Hoops.
Borini had a chance to open the scoring for The Merseyside outfit in the opening moments, as the Italian raced onto a loose ball, before rounding Barry Murphy, but he shot high and wide of Murphy’s goal.
The Reds did took the lead after seven minutes, as Jordan Ibe beat Hoops full back, Simon Madden, before pulling the ball back for Iago Aspas who passed the ball beyond Murphy, and into the net.
The Hoops had an opportunity to level the score on 12 minutes. Simon Madden crossed from the right wing to find the head of Ciaran Kilduff, whose header was expertly saved by Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal.
Despite being on the back foot for the majority of the first half The Hoops did have some chances of their own. Ryan Brennan capitalised on a poor Kelly clearance, before volleying the ball over Brad Jones, but the effort also sailed over The Red’s net minder’s cross-bar.
The Hoops came within a hairs breath of equalising just three minutes before the break, as Simon Madden crossed for Ryan Brennan, however his effort cannoned off the inside of Jones’s post and was cleared to safety.
Despite making two changes at the break The Reds began the second half rapidly, and Borini doubled The Merseysider’s lead just two minutes into the second half. Ibe broke down the left hand side, before finding the Italian forward, who slotted the ball past Murphy from 12 yards.
Brendan Rodgers’s charges were continuing to dominate, and the clever nature of Iago Aspas almost gave his side a third, as Ibe played the ball to the forward, before the Spaniard back heeled the ball back into the path of the winger to leave him one on one with Murphy, only for Ibe to chip the ball over the bar from just three yards out.
Borini could’ve bagged his second after 57 minutes, as he latched onto a pass from Ibe, before unleashing an effort that rebounded back off Murphy’s post.
Liverpool did manage to bag a third on 74 minutes, as Iago Aspas cut inside, before seeing his cross deflected to centre half, Kelly who bundled the ball into the net to extend The Red’s lead.
Craig Hyland came on for Murphy in The Hoops goal midway through the second half, and he was called into action on 80 minutes, as he had to be alert to deny Jordan Ibe, after the winger had burst down the wing and unleashed a powerful effort.
Fellow substitutes, Cameron Brannigan and Jack Dunn combined for The Merseysider’s fourth goal, as Brannigan put Dunn one on with Hyland in The Hoops goal, and Dunn brushed the ball past The Rovers net minder to round off the win.
The Hoops now turn their focus to Saturday’s home game with Athlone Town.
