Leeds United recorded a comfortable win over Shelbourne thanks to goals from Noel Hunt, Ross Killock along with a brace from Ryan Hall. The large amount of Dublin based Leeds fans also managed to provide Shels with one of their biggest attendance of the season in a game that turned out to be a worthwhile exercise for both sides.
A slow start from both sides meant the large crowd had little or nothing to shout about with the only cheer in the open ten minutes coming after Rudolph Austin used some fancy footwork to beat two Shels players near the halfway line.
Noel Hunt created the game's first shot of note at the same ground where he scored his first League Of Ireland goal. The striker turned on the edge of the box before shooting just over Lee Murphy’s cross bar.
Zac Thompson then was the playmaker for the Irish international to open the scoring. Thompson played the ball over the top of the Shels defence who were caught sleeping by Hunt. The former Reading striker got in behind the defence before flicking the ball over the on rushing Murphy.
Shels never really looked like getting any sort of shot on target in the first half as Leeds dominated the tempo of the game with their defence clearly showing the difference in quality between the respective teams.
Matt Smith then had a great chance to put Leeds two goals to the good with a headed effort. The perfect ball was delivered in by Alex Mowatt from the left hand side. The header however was just about palmed over by Murphy in the Shels goal.
Just two minutes later Ryan Hall got his first goal of the game and Leeds second of the night. Noel Hunt this time was the man who would be credited with the assist as he once again caused issues for the Shels back line. Hunt received the ball on the edge of the box before turning and sliding the ball to Ryan Hall who smashed the ball first time past Lee Murphy.
Leeds continued their dominance at the start of the second half as Shels made a total of five half time changes. The first shot of the first half in fact took nearly ten minutes to happen. It fell to the smallest man on the pitch in the form of Leeds midfield man Chris Dawson. Half time substitute Niall Burdon was not going to be beaten by an effort from 25 yards however as the keeper made a comfortable save.
As we reached the hour mark Leeds got their third, this time coming from a set piece. The corner was whipped in by Alex Mowatt. The ball then found the head of Matt Smith who headed the ball downwards causing confusion in the Shels defence. Ross Killock then benefited from the Reds indecision as he went and headed the ball past Burdon from inside the six yard box.
Mowatt once again had a part to play in Leeds fourth goal as the Championship side began to run away with the game. The ball was played through by Mowatt to Ryan Hall who had the simple task of looping the ball over Niall Burdon with the Shels keeper stranded in no mans land in the middle of the penalty area.
A great run from Chris Dawson nearly brought us the goal of the game as he tippy toed past Paul Andrews and Darren Tinnelly. His left footed effort however just curled over the crossbar.
The last ten minutes played out without any major incidents as Leeds finished out the game in professional fashion. The English side demonstrated the difference in quality between the Championship and the League Of Ireland.
