Sunderland welcomes goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Manchester United

Sunderland has confirmed the signing of 23-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Manchester United. Bishop has signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Bishop, whose career began with non-league Southend United, made 39 appearances before he moved to Old Trafford in January 2020.

His 2021-22 season was spent on loan with League Two side Mansfield.

During his tenure with the Stags, he played every league game, reached the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium and secured 16 clean sheets across all competitions.

Following his time with Manchester United's summer tour in the USA, Bishop is now eager to begin training with Tony Mowbray’s first-team squad as they prepare for the new Sky Bet Championship season.

On joining Sunderland, Bishop expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “You see the direction that the club is going, playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league. I think that is so exciting, so I want to come in and earn the right to play for such a great team and a great club.”

Sunderland’s Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman, commented on the acquisition of Bishop, "Nathan’s a player we have been tracking for some time and we’ve stayed patient to complete this transfer. He’s ambitious, positive and focused on improving and trying to earn a place in the starting eleven."

He concluded by saying, "it’s not always easy to align at the right moment, but we are happy Nathan is here prior to the season commencing."
