Who should Martin O'Neill start on Friday against Switzerland

The team Martin O'Neill should pick to play Switzerland

Based on the 33-man squad picked by Martin O'Neill to play Switzerland and Slovakia.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

1.Darren Randolph (West Ham United)

Club appearances this season: 11

ECQ appearances: 4

West Ham United's second-choice goalkeeper is short on game time leading up to the tournament.

The former Birmingham goalkeeper should be Ireland's No. 1 for the foreseeable future and needs to play as much as he can between now and June.

The 28-year-old is most likely to have a maximum of three club games (if the Hammers reach the FA Cup final), before Ireland take on Sweden on June 13.

2.Séamus Coleman (Everton)

Club appearances this season: 30

ECQ appearances: 8

The Everton right-back is Ireland's most impressive defender. His attacking display's helped him catch the eye in the Premier League but has been more diligent in his defensive responsibilities in the last couple of seasons.

Put in an outstanding performance away to Poland and will be one of the more important players for Ireland this summer.

4. Shane Duffy (Blackburn Rovers)

Club appearances this season: 37

ECQ appearances: 0

With just one Irish cap to his name, what the Blackburn Rovers defender lacks in experience he certainly makes up for in potential.

The move to Blackburn in 2014 has ensured regular first-team football for the Derry native and has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace in the summer. Playing the full 90 minutes will provide invaluable experience in an area where Ireland are lacking talent.

5.Richard Keogh (Derby County)

Club appearances this season: 39

ECQ appearances: 5

The Derby County captain has started every game this season in the Championship for the Rams.

The 29-year-old grew in importance as Ireland's qualifying campaign developed and has forced his way into contention as one of Martin O'Neill's first-choice defenders.

An experienced campaigner having amassed nearly 400 league appearances in his career but has just 11 Irish caps to his name. Another couple of solid performances this week and the former Coventry defender will be almost certain to start against Sweden.

3. Matt Doherty (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Club appearances this season: 30

ECQ appearances: 0

After starting the last 18 games for his club, Matt Doherty has catapulted himself into contention of being part of Ireland's Euro 2016 adventure.

The decision to bring two left-backs will mean Robbie Brady can operate further forward in his more favoured position on the left wing.

The Irish management team will be already aware of what Stephen Ward is capable of in that position and Friday provides the perfect opportunity for Doherty, who can also play at right-back to make his Irish debut and stake a claim to be in the final 23-man squad.

6. Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham City)

Club appearances this season: 38

ECQ appearances: 0

Gleeson won his first cap back in 2007 under Steve Staunton as a 19-year-old but it was only when he moved to MK Dons in 2009 did the midfielder start to fulfill his potential.

The former Wolves midfielder has played in all but one of Birmingham's league matches as they hover outside the play-off positions. The holding-midfielder has been one of their standout performers as the Blues push for a return to the Premier League and deserves the chance to show his international credentials this week.

8.James McCarthy (Everton)

Club appearances this season: 28

ECQ appearances: 9

With both Jeff Hendrick and Harry Arter missing the games through injury, James McCarthy makes it into the team to face the Swiss.

The Irish fans have been craving for McCarthy to replicate the performances of past Irish midfield heroes such as Roy Keane but the fans have slowly accepted that this is not the style of the Glasgow-born midfielder.

His performance at home to Germany should now be his benchmark; there were no crunching tackles but showed tireless commitment to closing down the Germans and offering himself as a passing outlet to the defence by finding space in the centre of the pitch.

More good performances at the European Championships and we could be looking at the next Irish captain.

7.Anthony Pilkington (Cardiff City)

Club appearances this season: 36

ECQ appearances: 0

Although Pilkington has operated as a central striker for Cardiff this season, the 27-year-old is more than comfortable operating as a winger, a position where he made his name with Norwich City.

Pilkington has not played for Ireland since scoring in the 4-1 win over the USA in a November friendly back in 2014. Very much a confidence player, he is back showing of glimpses of the form he showed in the Premier League, and his eight goals this season have the Blubirds flying close to the play-offs.

10. Alan Judge (Brentford)

Club appearances this season: 34

ECQ appearances: 0

With 14 goals and nine assists for Brentford, Judge has been directly involved in nearly half of all the goals scored by the Bees in the league this season.

His bravery on the ball is backed-up with technical ability comparable to any other person in the Irish squad. The Dubliner also possesses more of a goalscoring threat than Wes Hoolahan, for who he could be a back-up to in the tournament.

11. Robbie Brady (Norwich City)

Club appearances this season: 29

ECQ appearances: 11

Some Norwich fans questioned the Canaries spending £7 million on the former Hull City midfielder but the FAI Young Player of the Year has quickly won over the Norwich faithful with his never-say-die spirit and sweet left foot.

Played mostly as a left-back for both club and country this season, Brady is still best suited operating as a winger where he can have more of an impact on games, while his inexperience playing as a defender has been evident at times this season. He played on the left flank against West Brom at the weekend as he scored the winning goal as he battles to avoid back-to-back relegations.

9.Shane Long (Southampton)

Club appearances this season: 28

ECQ appearances: 9

The Southampton star is on track for his best goal haul in a single Premier League season, currently on seven goals, his best was eight with West Brom in the 2012/13 season.

Niggling injuries aside Long is enjoying his best run in the Southampton team this season and has started to replicate his Ireland form for the Saints.

The former Reading striker turned 29 this year and has earned 59 caps for Ireland without ever being considered an automatic starter for the national side. This season he has started to shrug off the super-sub tag with more composed all-round performances.

These games are the perfect opportunity for the Tipperary man to cement his place in the starting line-up ahead of the tournament.
