John played his schoolboy football with Cherry Orchard before going on a four years soccer scholarship at the University of Memphis, where he impressed for the college side The Tigers.
He returned to his native Dublin during 2005 and signed for Monaghan United in mid season, scoring twice in twelve starts. In February 2006 John transferred to Kildare County and spent one season at Station Road before moving on to Longford Town in 2007.
He left Longford at the end of that year, signing on for the 2008 season under Pete Mahon at UCD. It was a year in which the Belfield club were relegated from the Premier Division but John stayed on for 2009 when new boss Martin Russell led the 'Students' to the First Division title and an immediate return to the top flight.
In 2010 John emigrated to Canada where he played for Hamilton Croatia. However he returned to Ireland in time to sign up with Monaghan United for the 2011 season. He went on to make 30 league appearances that year, scoring five goals, as Monaghan won promotion to the Premier Division under manager Roddy Collins.
