Roy is another player to have come up through the underage system at Athlone Town and in January 2011 he was named in new manager, Mike Kerley's, first team squad for the coming season.
Roy made his league debut for Athlone on 25 March 2011 in a 0-0 draw at home to Cork City and he made 14 league appearances over the season. Injury ruined 2012 for Roy and, having sat on the bench for the opening game of the season, he was ruled out through the summer.
