Liam’s Biography

Liam is a former Irish international midfielder who started his career at Celtic in 1997. He made his league debut against Dundee United on 21 May 2000 but his four year spell with the first team was disrupted by injury. During Liam's time at Parkhead he also had a spell on loan at Danish club Aarhus during which he made 18 league appearances. Having made just 26 league appearances for Celtic, Liam left the club to join Manchester United in the summer of 2004.

Liam spent two years at Old Trafford, making 22 senior appearances, but spent the final seven months of his contract on loan at Leeds United. He made 28 league appearances for the Yorkshire club before returning to Manchester at the end of the 2005/06 season. Later that summer he left The Red Devils and signed a deal at Sunderland AFC under manager Roy Keane. Liam made 57 league appearances during his two and a half years with the Black Cats but in January 2009 he moved south, signing a deal at Queens Park Rangers. Just four months later, at the end of the 2008/09 season, Liam was released by the London club having made just 13 league appearances.

Liam remained without a club throughout the summer of 2009 but eventually signed a two year deal at Hibernian in Scotland in September of that year. He made 66 league appearances in his two year spell at the Edinburgh club but left in the summer of 2011 at which point he moved to Australia to sign for Perth Glory. He would spend four years down under playing for Perth, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City.

On 14 January 2015 Liam returned to Ireland and signed for John Caulfield at Cork City. He became a key member of the Cork midfield, playing in twenty-nine league games as Cork finished runners-up to Dundalk once more. He was also played in the FAI Cup Final but Dundalk defeated Cork by a one-nil victory after extratime. He left the club at the end of the season.

Liam passed away at home in Cork following a battle with pancreatic cancer on February 9th, 2018.
