Dundalk boss Ian Foster has convinced centre-back Garry Breen to follow him from Galway United to Oriel Park.

The 20-year-old penned a one-year deal to become the club's fifth new signing since Foster took over at the helm and boost their defensive options.

Having started his career with Manchester City, the lanky defender spent some time with Hereford United before linking up with Galway last season, where he excelled alongside Shane Guthrie in the heart of The Tribesmen's backline.

Now the Ireland U-21 international is set to continue his career with The Lilywhites and is likely to strike up a new partnership with Wayne Hatswell - another new arrival at the County Louth club.

"I’m delighted to get him on board. He’s a big, strong lad. He’s a good defender and he’s also comfortable on the ball," Foster told the club's official website.

"He has got a season behind him in the League of Ireland, he knows the division now, and I hope he can improve again this year.

"He’s of that age, he’s only 20, he’s improving with every game, he wants to learn, he wants to improve, and what he will have is decent competition in the back four.”

Foster is still on the look-out for potential recruits and admitted speaking to Aaron Greene about a move as the former Galway United attacker is weighing up his options following the breakdown of his move to Peterborough United.
