Mauro Almeida could be set for a shock return to Sligo Rovers just months after terminating his contract with the FAI Cup runners-up.

The Portuguese defender became an instant hit at The Showgrounds when he joined in 2008 following spells in England with Accrington Stanley and Swindon Town.

In that first season for The Bit O'Red he formed a strong partnership with Gavin Peers in the heart of the defence, but injury restricted his playing time last term and he eventually left the club.

However, it now appears that the 28-year-old could be on his way back on a pay-as-you-play contract, similar to one that former Ireland international Alan Moore had when he played with the club in 2008.

If he does re-sign for Paul Cook's side then he will face increased competition for the centre-back slot he previously marshaled as Peers and Alan Keane are already on the books, while Derek Foran (Bray Wanderers) is expected to complete a switch.

Meanwhile, Cook is currently taking a closer look at striker John Cass (Skelmersdale United), right-back Paul Whelan (Monaghan United) and the midfield duo of John Dillon and Jason McCartney.
