Lyons Joins Drogs

Drogheda United have today announced the signing of Chris Lyons following his departure from Sligo Rovers.

Lyons began his League of Ireland career when signing for UCD in 2011 before moving to Bohemians for the 2013 season.

While at Bohemians, he scored four times in 20 appearances before signing for the Shamrock Rovers' B side for their First Division season, finishing top scorer with six goals in 20 games.

With Rovers deciding not to enter the 2015 First Division season, Lyons made the step back up to Premier Division football as he signed for Bray Wanderers, before joining Dave Robertson's Sligo Rovers in January of this year.

However, after failing to cement a first team place, Lyons left Sligo in July after making just six appearances, in which he scored once, in a 1-1 draw with Finn Harps.

Speaking to the club website following the addition of Lyons to his squad, Pete Mahon expressed his delight at signing the forward.

“We are delighted that Chris has decided to sign for us and he will give us an extra push in our efforts to win promotion. He is a quality Premier Division player with great pace who can play either wide or through the middle."

Lyons becomes the fifth addition to the Drogheda side in recent weeks, joining Kevin Farragher, Gareth McCaffrey, John McKeown and Richie Purdy, with Mahon believing he now has a strong squad together as the Boynesiders look to continue their push for promotion.

"We have now put together a very strong squad of players, whilst remaining within our budget, and I am very happy with their quality and commitment that was demonstrated in the performance against Limerick last Friday.”
